Marantz Launches New Melody X (M-CR612) Music Streaming System

Founded in 1953, Marantz has a long and rich history of designing audiophile components embraced by music lovers and critical lovers around the world.

Their Melody series of products has evolved over the years, embracing new technologies with each incarnation, and has long been one of the best “just add speakers” systems on the market.

The new Melody X (M-CR612) is packed with features, making it a fantastic option for a compact HiFi system.

It can still spin discs with the built in CD Player, still features a FM radio and the latest DAB+ tuner. It has two optical digital inputs, allowing you to connect your TV to it, it’ll also turn on automatically and switch over to the correct optical input when you turn your TV on, making this a superb alternative to a soundbar if you’re looking to improve the sound of your TV.

You can connect your smart devices to it using Bluetooth or stream with Apple AirPlay 2.

Speaking of music streaming, there’s a lot of choice with the Melody X. It’s packed with options…

  • Internet Radio

  • Spotify

  • Amazon Prime Music

  • Deezer

  • Napster

It’s part of the HEOS group of products - HEOS is a multiroom music streaming platform, so the Melody X will appear as another player on the HEOS app alongside other HEOS products, such as the HEOS wireless speakers or Denon AV Receivers. Thanks to HEOS you can also access music files stored locally on your home network, so if you have a collection of music stored digitally, say some CDs you’ve ripped or if you’ve been “digitizing” your vinyl collection, you will be able to browse and playback nice and easily.

It also supports the three major voice control agents, so you can use Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa or Apple’s Siri to control the unit, functionality of course varies depends on which agent you use, but basics such as volume, play/pause etc should work across all three.

There’s four channels of audio amplification, meaning you can have two different pairs of speakers, with independent volume control, being driven by the Melody X, or you can connect just a single pair of speakers and have double the output power vs connecting two pairs.

The new Melody X, or M-CR612, offers a superb selection of features and options and really makes it a great all-rounder. It looks rather smart too.

First impressions from Garry in our Maidstone store…

So, the new Melody X system from Marantz has come through our doors…

We have taken the rather stylish silver and champagne finish unit out to put on demonstration, makes a striking addition to the range of Hi-Fi systems on the shop floor if I do say so myself.

Straight into the demo room to give it a bit of a work out, nice and easy to set up with the HEOS App, ready to go within minutes and streaming TIDAL.

Plenty of connection options on the back, including optical so you can put your TV sound through the system as well….

First pairing was with some Acoustic Energy AE109 Floor Standing speakers (SRP@£499) connected with Chord Clearway speaker cable. Track of choice for the first play was The White Buffalo – The Woods, as featured in Netflix’s The Punisher. Rich guitar strings and his distinctive voice are very well presented, produces a lovely warm sound with good detail.

The Melody X certainly packs a punch, good range and a real dynamic sound to it, the amp will certainly power a bigger pair of floor standing speakers if you need it too that’s for sure.

Time for some bookshelf speakers, which in most cases is what it will be paired with in a customer’s home, our choice for this is PSB Alpha P5 (SRP@£299), this will give us a nice package around the £1000 mark.

Time for some Bob Dylan – Man in the Long Black Coat, from the first pluck of the guitar string it produces bags of detail and tight bass from the digital amps and it is not too long before you are in full foot tapping mood which is always a positive thing. It does not sound like your average one box system; it sounds very musical and dynamic.

I would go as far to say this Melody X could take on some of our full-blown Hi-Fi separates and if you’re tight for space then this is a definite contender, don’t be fooled by this little box because you sure do get some big sound from it!
